About the book

1948. In a village near Kazan a woman, the watchwoman of a food warehouse, is strangled with a clothesline. Suspects detained in the heat of the moment prove after careful checking to have nothing to do with the case. Soon a second, similar murder takes place: again a woman is killed, and again the weapon is a rope... Major Vitaly Shchelkunov notices a small round mark at the scene. It looks very much as if the killer walks with a cane. The detectives take heart: a limping killer is much easier to find! However, their delight is soon cooled by the testimony of the next victim, who miraculously escaped the maniac's clutches...

A unique chance to return to one of the brightest periods of Soviet history: the postwar time. Real people, real criminal cases, gripping plot twists.

Characters resembling the cult figures of the film “The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed”. The spirit of the time, tenderly kept in many families. An unusual and realistic look at the “kitchen” of the everyday work of the Soviet militia.
