About the book

1948. On the outskirts of Kazan an elderly couple, husband and wife, are murdered and robbed. There are no signs of a break-in and no damage to the door. Evidently the owners let the killer into the house themselves and paid for it with their lives. The head of the anti-banditry department, Major Vitaly Shchelkunov, is puzzled: this is the third similar murder in recent weeks. In every case the victims were old people unable to resist. Witnesses who happened to glimpse the criminal at dusk say he is tall and wears a military or militia uniform. That is something already... Major Shchelkunov does not yet suspect that this very uniform will soon become the cause of his own personal tragedy...

A unique chance to return to one of the brightest periods of Soviet history: the postwar time. Real people, real criminal cases, gripping plot twists.

Characters resembling the cult figures of the film “The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed”. The spirit of the time, tenderly kept in many families. An unusual and realistic look at the “kitchen” of the everyday work of the Soviet militia.
