About the book

Prison breaks many. Some sink to the bottom, others hold their rank. Some are destined to survive, others to die in obscurity. Some sell themselves for an extra piece of bread, others stake their lives for justice; honor is dear to them, they are masters of their word. But there are also those who are called “werewolves”. Out of an animal instinct of self-preservation these dreadful non-humans adapt to any situation, like chameleons changing their color, and nothing is sacred to them. The famous thief-in-law, Overseer of Russia, nicknamed Varyag, meets exactly such a monster on his way: the retired colonel Timofey Bespaly was once a thief, but traded his death sentence for the tunic of a camp enforcer and rose to head a “bitch camp” in the Arctic, where for several decades he ruled over genuine lawlessness. The “confession” of the former camp “kum” leaves Varyag astonished. Vladislav Ignatov, who had seen a great deal in his time, was nonetheless shocked by the terrifying account of life behind barbed wire and of the cruel customs that reign in the human pack.
